The judge from the Knox County Circuit Court went before the County Council to request more funding.

Judge Monica Gilmore informed the council that she is working to clear the backlog of court cases in the county and anticipates 20 trials before the year is over.

Since 2016, there have only been twelve jury trails in Knox County, but Gilmore says some jury trials end up not happening after plea agreements are given.

Gilmore says they have a jury trial scheduled twice a month through the end of the year for criminal cases.

So far this year there have been 3 jury trials.

Right now Gilmore informed the council that they currently only have a little over $8,000 left in their budget to cover costs.

County Council President Harry Nolting conveyed his appreciation to Gilmore and the hard work that is happening to clear up the legal system.

The council unanimously approved $30,000 be moved from the rainy day fund to the Knox County Circuit Court budget to ensure work continues.
