The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is recognizing the quick actions of two jail staff members .

Both were instrumental in helping to save an inmate from choking earlier this month.

On January 8th, around 12:45 in the afternoon, Sergeant Michael Hicks was in the jail’s booking area when Transport Officer Luke Sydow noticed an inmate in a holding cell in distress. The inmate had not activated the emergency button, but Officer Sydow spotted the situation on the jail’s camera system.

Sergeant Hicks rushed to the cell, lifted the inmate off the floor, and performed the Heimlich maneuver. The inmate began breathing normally and was taken to the medical suite for observation.

The Sheriff’s Office is commending both officers for their attentiveness and dedication to duty.
