Indiana Governor Mike Braun has proclaimed this week as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

The proclamation recognizes the role dispatchers play in linking citizens with police, fire, and emergency medical personnel—often under stress and in urgent situations. It highlights their integrity, selflessness, and use of advanced tools like Text-to-911.

Knox County Emergency Management also thanked local 911 dispatchers for their dedication.  The local EMA gave a history lesson on their social media site saying that the 911 system that dates back to 1968, when the first 911 call was placed in Haleyville, Alabama.

Today’s system, known as E911, gives dispatchers automatic location and phone number information, and supports cell phone GPS and Text-to-911 features—making emergency response faster and more accurate.
