Indiana’s three candidates for governor clashed during Thursday night’s debate, with each taking aim at the others’ records and proposals. The debate, which was the second gubernatorial debate this week, included Libertarian candidate Donald Rainwater alongside Democrat Jennifer McCormick and Republican Mike Braun.
The candidates focused largely on policy, particularly their differing approaches to reducing property taxes. McCormick was quick to point out how her plan diverged from her opponents’.
“These gentlemen have property tax plans that would decimate our local governments,” McCormick said. “And our local governments, chambers, and farmers have said that.”
On the issue of education, Braun targeted McCormick’s record as the former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, criticizing her for a lack of improvement during her tenure, while McCormick noted that policy was largely shaped by Republican lawmakers.
“If you were in charge there for four years and results never got any better, I think you’ve got to be held accountable when that’s the one thing you did in state government,” Braun said.
Rainwater, the Libertarian candidate, took shots at both of his opponents, positioning himself as an outsider free from the influence of large donors.
“I don’t have anybody pulling my strings or giving me large campaign donations in order to make sure I do things their way,” Rainwater said.
The three candidates are set to meet again for one final debate later this month.
