Knox County Mining Accident

UPDATE at 10am:

Six Sunrise Coal miners were injured during an underground accident early Friday morning.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department says they responded to the Sunrise Coal Mine on Perry Road at 12:55am for the accident.

Two of the injured workers were transported by medical helicopter to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Four other injured miners were transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

The Sheriff’s office says the accident appears to have been a collision involving the mine ride.

The injured workers’ names have not been released at this time, pending notification of family.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.

Not much information has been released yet on a local coal mining accident.

Knox County Central Dispatch confirmed this incident occurred just before midnight at a Sunrise Coal Mine facility in northern Knox County.

The mine is located near Oaktown on Agri Care Road but has an entry portal on Perry Road near Bruceville.

Several people were said to be injured with two helicopters dispatched to the scene.  Unconfirmed reports are that two people were flown out and one person was transported to  Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

The incident may have happened underground but again that is unconfirmed at this time.

Responding agencies included Good Samaritan EMS, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, and Washington Township Fire, with assistance from emergency services based in Carlisle.

Central Dispatch told First City News that no further details were available.
