George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is offering a chance to explore history on this Saturday with a hike retracing the 1778 march of British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton and his soldiers to Fort Sackville in Vincennes. That actual event happened on today’s date, December 17, 1778.
Hamilton’s men endured icy rivers, harsh weather, and constant threats before arriving in Vincennes. They held the fort for two months before George Rogers Clark’s surprise attack reclaimed it.
The hike begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday at the park visitor center, with participants carpooling to Kimmell Park. From there, the two-mile hike back to the Clark Memorial will include stories about the march. Those not wishing to hike can attend a discussion on Vincennes’ history at the visitor center from 1 to 3 p.m.
