A man was shot and killed in Jasper Thursday, and his alleged assailant is in custody.

Police say the shooting happened around 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the SureStay Hotel. Authorities say Jakahri Curry of Macon, Georgia and Lawrence Jonte Walker of Cleveland, Ohio got into a verbal dispute that escalated. According to investigators, Curry pulled a gun and shot Walker several times.

Curry then retreated into the hotel, where officers with the Jasper Police Department later took him into custody. Walker was rushed to Deaconess Memorial Hospital but did not survive his injuries.

The Jasper Police Department is working with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, and the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office as the investigation continues.
