Indiana school board races could soon become partisan under a bill advanced by a Senate committee Monday.

Republican Senator Gary Byrne, who authored the legislation, argues school board races are already partisan, just not openly declared. He says voters often ask which candidates align with their political views.

Opponents say the change could disqualify some government employees from serving due to existing laws restricting political involvement.

The Senate Elections Committee sent the bill to the full Senate by a six to three vote, though multiple members who voted for the measure said they might not do so again on the floor.
