The Saint James Performing Arts Center is bringing a series of musical events to Vincennes this spring, beginning with “Originals” this Saturday, March 29. The concert will feature ten local artists performing their own compositions, offering musicians a rare opportunity to share their original work with a receptive audience.

“A lot of these people perform and do covers out in public, but it’s not very often an audience wants to sit and be receptive to an original piece because they want to hear what they know, which is fine,” said Jason Woodburn, events coordinator for the center. “But it gives that creative juice to the artists to be able to perform their own stuff where they have a captive audience that wants to listen.”

Following “Originals,” the center will host “Broadway at Saint James” on April 4, featuring the Vincennes Lincoln Singers performing well-known Broadway hits. The season’s biggest event, “Altogether Now – A Concert of Beatles Music,” takes place on April 26, with twelve bands performing three hours of Beatles classics.

In addition to concerts, Saint James is also holding Lenten Evensong services on Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Trevor Murray, who serves at the church, says the service blends traditional worship with modern music.

“It’s a very traditional service, but it’s set to more modern music,” Murray said. “The goal is simply to get people together and really to reach out to people who normally would not be interested in a church service or who may not attend church other places. It’s music meant to enlighten but also to give some relaxation.”  Murray has composed all the music featured in Evensong at Saint James.

Admission to all events is free. For more details, visit St. James Performing Arts on social media.
