The Indiana Senate has approved a major property tax reform package and sent it to the governor.
Republican Senator Travis Holdman says the plan will bring relief for most homeowners, with two-thirds expected to pay less in 2026 than they did in 2025.
Starting next year, property owners will get a 10 percent credit on their tax bills, up to $300. Seniors 65 and older will get an extra $150, and disabled veterans will see another $250.
The plan could cost local governments up to $1.8 billion over three years. Republicans propose new local income tax options to help fill the gap.
But Democratic Senator Greg Taylor says that will likely lead to cuts in services. He warns that road conditions and access to government services could get worse.
Governor Mike Braun says he’ll sign the bill, calling it historic and a step toward a fairer, more transparent tax system.
